We're doing this by building the next generation of smaller, more cost-effective spacecraft to bring the world online.
As a team, we’ve launched two satellites into orbit, signed ten commercial deals worth over $1 billion in revenue, raised over $500 million from top global investors, and recruited a team of over 300 world-class engineers. We all work out of our (legendary) San Francisco office, which was once used to build ships during the World Wars.
Our satellites, which operate from geostationary orbit (GEO), weigh only 400 kg and utilize a proprietary software-defined radio payload. Each satellite can connect over two million people, and we’re very excited for the impact we’ll soon have in the Philippines, Peru, Mexico, and more!
Backed by substantial funding and a passionate, collaborative team, we offer a rewarding work environment where you'll learn and make a significant impact, no matter where you are in your career.
Apply and join us on our journey towards global connectivity!
Senior Electrical Engineer — Power: High Voltage
As a Senior Electrical Engineer for High Voltage Power, you will be tasked with conceptualizing, designing, testing, validating, and otherwise owning power converters and power systems specializing in high voltage. You will work with a range of multidisciplinary team members to engineer the best solution, trading size, weight, cost, power efficiency, thermal management, and other key requirements. Specific high voltage considerations include electric field analysis, familiarity with partial breakdown mechanisms and prevention in solid, gas and vacuum insulation systems, partial discharge testing, industry standards for creepage and clearance and potting processes for high voltage systems.
You will be joining an established team of experienced power engineers working to create the next generation of power conversion on our next generation satellites. Day-to-day will include simulations, schematic, layout, and hands-on board bring-up, debugging, and optimizing. Every day is a new exciting challenge to build what hasn't been built, and a new exciting opportunity to put your skills to the test engineering the future of the space industry.
Role:
- High voltage analysis, design, and test including transformer design, PCB design, and component selection.
- Technical ownership of design of kW-level power systems for our satellites
- Manage and control key components such as solar panel arrays, power regulation and distribution, and high-density batteries
- Integrate these systems into the spacecraft by working closely with the rest of the team
- Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring additional teammates to our rapidly-growing team.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- 4+ years of experience
- A passion for hardware development, including working in a fast-paced environment and hands-on design and development
- Experience working with, designing for, and testing high voltage components and systems
- Experience in designing, building, and testing analog and digital circuits
- Experience in designing DC-DC power converters
- Experience with PCB thermal considerations
- Mastery of electrical CAD (Altium preferred, but not required)
- Experience with electromagnetic field modeling software
- Experience with magnetics in power electronics
- Don't meet them all? Not a problem. Please apply even if you do not meet all these criteria.
Bonus:
- EMI/EMC experience
- Experience with designing for fault tolerance, especially to withstand a radiation environment
- Experience with photovoltaics
