Summary
The Senior Tax Manager leads and oversees the company’s tax function, ensuring accurate compliance, reporting, and planning across multiple jurisdictions. This role manages complex tax filings, directs tax provision processes, and ensures reconciliation and alignment with accounting standards. Acting as a strategic advisor, the Senior Tax Manager provides guidance on tax planning, business decisions, and risk management, while serving as a primary point of contact for audits and external advisors.
As a senior member of the finance function, this role partners closely with Finance, Legal, and Operations teams to support business growth and decision-making, drive process improvements, and implement scalable tax strategies.
Responsibilities
Review and Finalize Returns: Lead and manage the accurate and timely preparation and review of complex US federal and state/local income tax returns for various entities (C-Corp, S-Corp, Partnership, etc.). This often includes the final review before filing.
Income Tax Provision (ASC 740): Directly manage the quarterly and annual US income tax provision process under US GAAP (ASC 740), including the calculation of the Effective Tax Rate (ETR), deferred tax assets and liabilities, FIN 48/ASC 740-10 (Uncertain Tax Positions), and related financial statement disclosures.
Tax Account Reconciliation: Oversee the reconciliation of tax accounts, ensuring consistency between the general ledger, tax returns, and tax provision calculations.
Tax Research and Planning: Proactively monitor and research changes in US tax law (e.g., changes to the Internal Revenue Code, state tax legislation). Develop and implement tax planning strategies to legally minimize the Company's overall US tax liability.
Audit Management: Act as the primary point of contact for IRS, state, and local tax audits. Manage the audit defence process, prepare complex information requests, and negotiate with tax authorities.
Internal Consulting: Provide expert tax guidance and advice to senior management and internal departments (Finance, Legal, Operations) on the tax implications of major business decisions, transactions, and restructuring.
Process Improvement: Drive the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of tax processes, controls, and technology (tax software, ERP systems) to enhance efficiency and ensure proper governance.
Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, train, and develop junior tax staff, senior accountants, and analysts, managing their workflows and performance.
External Advisor Management: Manage relationships and deliverables from outside tax advisors, consultants, and external auditors (e.g., Big 4 firms), ensuring work is timely, cost-effective, and aligned with company strategy.
Desired skills and competencies
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited university. A focus on Taxation is highly preferred.
CPA certification (or equivalent professional accounting qualification for EMEA, e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA) strongly preferred.
Law degree and/or MBA a strong plus.
7+ years of progressive experience in corporate tax accounting, compliance, and/or tax provision preparation, preferably in a large multinational corporation (MNC) and/or a Big4 public accounting firm.
Demonstrated experience in preparing and reviewing complex tax returns and calculating Effective Tax Rates (ETR) / tax provisions (ASC 740 / IAS 12).
Solid understanding of relevant tax laws, accounting principles (US GAAP/ IFRS), and tax regulations applicable to the US.
Proactive and experienced communicator with the ability to articulate complex tax concepts clearly to non-tax professionals and influence cross-organizational processes.
Highly analytical, efficient, and creative problem-solver, comfortable with ambiguity, complexity, and nuance in tax matters.
Computer software skills: Proficient in MS Office tools (especially Excel for tax calculations and data analysis); Experience with tax preparation software (e.g., OneSource, GoSystem, SAP Tax) and/or ERP systems is a significant advantage.
Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and strong writing skills in English.
Ability to work closely with others in a team environment and establish positive working relationships, while also demonstrating independent drive and professionalism in a multinational setting.
