Harris Regional Hospital is seeking a neonatologist/pediatric intensivist to manage the care of infants 32 to 40 weeks born at the New Generations Family Birthing Center. The physician will join the region?s premier pediatrics practice Harris Pediatric Care and be responsible for inpatient care only, sharing call with five full-time pediatricians. The hospital is developing a neonatal intensive care unit to serve approximately 300 families per year currently traveling to Asheville for services. The establishment of a NICU follows a $5.5 million renovation of the mother-baby and labor and delivery units, significant technological upgrades to fetal monitoring and respiratory equipment, advanced training of nursing (AWHONN) and lactation (IBCLC) staff, the addition of a pediatric NP for inpatient care, and the recruitment of a fifth pediatrician, a third OB/GYN and four CNMs in the last year. Changing market dynamics related to labor and delivery have resulted in significant delivery volume increases at Harris Regional Hospital, positioned as the hub for healthcare west of Asheville. The NICU environment will be highly collaborative among the neonatologist(s), pediatricians, OB/GYNs, and staff as the hospital builds on its strategic initiative of serving families locally with a higher degree of clinical care, strengthening coordination of care, and eliminating the burden of travel.
