Carbon Specialist

Company information

Muir AI is an early-stage startup on a mission to solve the world’s biggest problem: climate change. Our goal is to catalyze global emissions reductions at the gigaton scale – truly changing the course of the world’s climate.

To do this, we’re developing the climate intelligence engine for carbon emissions. By harnessing the latest AI and ML technologies, we’re fusing data from a diverse set of sources to gain unprecedented insights into corporate emissions. We empower companies to measure, track, and proactively reduce emissions across their supply chains, more rapidly, affordably and effectively than before. Using Muir’s outputs, companies take tangible steps towards confidently achieving their net-zero ambitions.

Are you someone who thrives on innovation, embraces complex challenges, and hungers to make a real difference for our world? If so, we’re looking for brilliant builders to join us in shaping the narrative of our planet’s future.

Role description

As a Carbon Specialist, you will leverage your carbon emissions expertise to enhance the cutting-edge carbon models we're forging at Muir, enabling Muir’s core services to more accurately and confidently assess supply chain emissions and identify reductions. You will drive expertise in emissions calculation approaches, models, and data sources, both internally and with customers. You’ll lead research, align methodologies with regulations and customer needs, and foster innovation for evolving landscapes, creating fundamentally new and impactful approaches to measuring and managing Scope 3 emissions. Beyond these key responsibilities, you will also be influential in shaping the norms and culture of the company writ large.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the subject matter expert, internally and externally to customers, on Muir’s approaches, models, and data sources for calculating carbon emissions.
  • Lead research, analysis, and innovation of the methodologies used across Muir’s carbon estimation services, and ensure alignment with regulations, scientific standards, and customer needs.
  • Develop and refine predictive models for carbon emissions using data analysis techniques.
  • Ensure the product clearly and effectively communicates emissions and insights to customers.
  • Deeply understand the needs of medium-to-large enterprise customers and tailor solutions to meet and exceed these needs.
  • As an early hire, be able to wear many hats, work quickly and effectively under ambiguity, and play a role in maturing and instilling Muir’s culture.

Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of the carbon emissions calculation landscape, including methodologies, data sources, regulations, scientific standards and customer requirements (e.g. emission factor databases, ISO 14027 / 14067, GHG Protocol, etc.).
  • Proven track record of driving innovation and adapting to evolving regulations, technologies, and data sources.
  • Hands-on experience performing complex carbon accounting calculations (e.g. through product life cycle assessment).
  • Proven ability to lead research, analysis, and documentation of complex methodologies.
  • Experience collaborating with data and software engineers to implement technology.
  • Preference for technical experience developing models and code for emissions calculations.
  • Flexibility and a level of comfort with early-stage ambiguity.
  • Bias for action and ability to iterate are critical.
  • Based in or willing to relocate to the Seattle area.

Pay transparency

Muir believes that pay transparency is an important aspect of a fair hiring process. As such, we have included the following range which a candidate’s offered salary for this role will fall within. The range has been determined from market averages from similar positions at companies of similar sizes, stages and geographies. Final salary compensation within this band will be determined by the skills and experience of the candidate.

Base salary range: $130,000 - $190,000

In addition to base salary, Muir provides equity in the company as compensation. As we grow and have success, we want that success to be shared with our employees who help build our company. Defining an equity offer upfront is tricky, so we will share exact percentage details with candidates who advance to later stages of the interview process.
