About the role

What You’ll Be Doing 👨‍💻👩‍💻 🛰 🛰

You will be responsible for developing ground satellite operations software using Python and AWS services. Don't worry, you do not need to be an expert in satellites or understand space! Satellites are just flying servers you can connect to every 90 minutes but we connect to hundreds of them.

You will develop APIs, integrate with various AWS services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, Fargate, and EKS along with focusing on scalability, security, cost, and performance of the software. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including satellite operators and other software engineers, to understand requirements, implement new features, and troubleshoot issues. Your strong knowledge of AWS services and best practices will enable you to optimize resource utilization and automate processes, ultimately contributing to the efficient and reliable operations of thousands of satellites.

BONUS: Understanding security and compliance with software services and architectures

Day to day, you will be a part of the engineering team of frontend and backend engineers working in an Agile Scrum environment.

Tech Skills

  • Proficiency in Python, GraphQL, Docker, and Terraform (or relevant IaaC language)
  • Experience with AWS services such as Lambda, ECS, EKS, CloudWatch, S3, EFS/EBS, EC2, and RDS
  • Strong knowledge of containerized applications and serverless architecture
  • Strong knowledge of designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting APIs services, distributed NoSQL and relational databases, caching systems, event-driven and multi-tier architectures
  • Strong knowledge of task automation and CI/CD pipeline building, preferably with GitHub actions but not required
  • Familiarity with Git and GitHub or similar framework for version control

Soft Skills

  • Deep technical analysis and troubleshooting skills
  • Independent self-starter; able to complete projects on time with minimal guidance
  • A high standard for software maintainability, quality, resilience, and performance
  • Strong cross-functional communication between a frontend, backend engineers and product manager

Background Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or related field)
  • 3+ years [professional] experience in backend development, DevOps, or other related role. Professional experience can be replaced with a self-starter who has drive, the technical skills, and is obsessed with their product.
  • We are not able to sponsor US Visa's and security clearances at this time.

Why you'll love working at Quindar

  • We are a remote-first workplace and value results over where you work from. If you want to work at a WeWork we will make that happen! If not, we provide work from home benefits so you always have a nice place to work, speedy internet, and of course coffee/tea!
  • We take work life balance very seriously. We require employees to take 15 days off but provide unlimited PTO and follow the US federal government holidays.
  • Mental health is just as important as physical so we provide quarterly health & wellness benefits.
  • Comprehensive health insurance for you and your family with 100% coverage for employees.
  • We encourage employees to save for retirement and provide a 4% 401(k) non-elective contribution.
  • Each quarter we have a 4-day company offsite. Previous locations include San Francisco, Nashville, and Denver.
  • Our culture and company is evolving. You will be key in creating the next major or minor version!

About the interview

TL;DR

We have a [rare] team of six technical co-founders and you will be a part of the first wave of hires! You can expect the process to take 2-3 weeks and to hopefully be extended an offer within a month of screening. Along the way you will get to meet the entire team because it’s not only important what you build but who you build it with. The interviews will be a mix of technical and culture (behavioral) questions, small coding challenges, and we will ask to talk with two references that you have worked with in the last 5 years.

Screening Call (30m)

Focus: 50% technical, 50% culturalInterviewers: 1 (Nate)

Someone drew the short straw of screening all candidates and who better than the co-founder who qualifies sales leads – our CEO Nate! Expect him to sell you…on Quindar. Don’t let that fool you, he is technical. The format for this screening call will be based on your resume.

Second Round (45 min)

Focus: 75% technical, 25% culturalInterviewers: 2 (Sunny & Shai)

Expect to be interviewed on technical concepts and to write some pseudo-code. They are 100% software engineers so you will work with them every day. Get to know them. Sunny leads product and Shai knows the latest technology before it’s even released to the public.

Third Round (45 min)

Focus: 75% technical, 25% culturalInterviewers: 2 (Zach & Dave/Matt)

More technical questions and more pseudo-code. Zach is our engineering lead and in charge of code reviews and managing technical debt. Dave/Matt split their time between software architecture, business, and writing code.

Reference Check & Coding/Design Challenge (Offline)

Interviewers: 1 (Nate)

While Nate will ask for the contact information of two references you have worked within the last 5 years, you will work on a capped 1-hour coding/design challenge offline.

Final Boss (30m)

Focus: 100% culturalInterviewers: 2 (Nate & Dave/Matt)

So, you made it this far? Congrats! You will meet the last co-founder and we will ask any outstanding questions and so should you!

About Quindar

Have you seen Apollo 13, The Martian, or Armageddon and recall all of the NASA engineers in a room with a bunch of monitors? Quindar is digitizing that away. Satellites are flying computers and we are revolutionizing the future of spacecraft operations by becoming the IT for space.

Our team has worked at OneWeb, Lockheed Martin, Iridium, Boeing, Orbital Sciences, and RedHat. We've operated dozens of satellites, worked on broadband and earth observation constellations, and serviced commercial and government users. We are using lessons learned from our previous aerospace and startup experiences to revolutionize the space industry and enable access to space without being an expert.
