Volta Labs

Volta Labs

Software Engineering
Boston, MA, USA
Posted on Apr 9, 2023
ABOUT US:
Volta Labs is building a suite of genomics applications for our first-of-its-kind digital fluidics sample prep automation platform. Our technology will remove the need for laborious sample setup, provide a technology-agnostic suite, and shorten sample processing time from hours to seconds. We believe our tech is the next step in unlocking the hospital of the future and will accelerate medical research by decades.
THE TEAM:
You'll join a team of innovative thinkers who love to experiment, collaborate, and win together. We are passionate about pushing the boundaries of automation, biology, computing, robotics, design, and user experience to benefit our customers and the world.
Our team is growing naturally and looking to add a Software Engineer with strong frontend skills to support our commercial launch. This is a unique engineering environment that combines software, firmware, robotics, biology, and chemistry into one product, with you working cross functionally between all groups. This is the perfect role for an engineer with some production experience behind them, ready to join a startup as the rocketship is taking off.
Day To Day and Year 1:
- Working with the design team, building controls, and deploying software updates to our Instrument Callisto to ensure User Protocols are easy to follow by scientists in the lab
- Documenting software design, implementation, and testing procedures to ensure clarity, maintenance, and scalability
- Act as a safety net, keeping an eye out for errors, supporting de-bugging, troubleshooting, and surfacing opportunities for process improvement and innovation
- Partnering with our hardware engineers, scientists, and product managers to ensure Callisto’s software is as robust and effective as possible
Within 3 months you’ll…have completed onboarding, be ramped into our code base and fully understand our product and opportunity. Training wheels will be off, and you’ll be working independently without oversight.
By 6 months you’ll…have shipped your first code set (or more) for new controls, be developing opinions and insights to surface to the senior team, and be actively learning and sharing your knowledge with your team.
At 12+ months you’ll…be supporting hiring, growing your technical acumen, moving cross functionally through the org, and owning projects beyond the Callisto frontend.
Your Experience
Volta sits at the crossroads of biology, robotics, and engineering. To be successful in this role, you should have accomplished the below and be confident in owning each area on our team:
- Hands on design, development, and launch to production experience of a complicated frontend system using React or another modern JS language.
- Ability to build a highly technical product for a low-tech audience
- A startup mindset - the ability to connect dots quickly, iterate on the fly, and have courage to take calculated risks
- Prior in-production collaboration with (or direct experience alongside) hardware engineers - this role is a close collaborator, and awareness of hardware constraints and general knowledge is a day-1 must have.
Nice to Have:
A keen interest in learning about molecular biology and genomics will bring our values together!
This is a full-time position that requires a significant amount of in-person work and collaboration onsite at our Seaport Office in Boston, MA. If you are unable to relocate or commute to the Boston MA area, this role won't be a match.
